COMMON QUESTIONS

Sanitary Tubing FAQ

Polished or unpolished tubing?

Polished tubing is intended for sanitary applications requiring a smooth, cleanable surface. Unpolished tubing is appropriate where a polished sanitary finish is not required.

What tubing sizes does Wayland offer?

Wayland tubing sizes cover ½ inch through 12 inches outside diameter (OD). Polished tubing is available from ½ inch through 12 inches OD, while unpolished tubing is available from 1 inch through 12 inches OD.

304L or 316L stainless steel?

Material selection should follow the process media, operating environment and project specification.

What is a 32Ra finish?

Ra means roughness average, a measurement expressed in microinches that indicates the smoothness of a stainless steel surface; a lower Ra value indicates a smoother finish. A 32Ra finish is a commonly specified 3-A sanitary surface-finish benchmark. Wayland polished tubing from ½ inch through 8 inches has a 20Ra ID and 32Ra OD finish, while 10-inch and 12-inch ASTM A778 tubing has a 32Ra ID/OD finish.

What lengths are available?

Wayland’s catalog specifies tubing in 20-foot lengths. Tubes are protected with poly sleeves and end caps and shipped in heavy-duty tri-wall boxes; wooden crates are available at additional cost.

Are tubing hangers available?

Yes. Wayland supplies tube and pipe hangers with stainless hardware and multiple insert and grommet options.

Are Material Test Reports available?

Yes. Material Test Reports are available for applicable Wayland tubing. Email info@waylandindustries.com with the product information or heat number to request an MTR.
